Getting Started Guide

What is this all about?
Open Science Initiative is a non-profit organization that is working to improve innovation and collaboration within science. We are going about this in two ways. First, we created a web application (www.opsci.org) that allows scientists to collaborate by creating topics, sharing references, and organizing things important to them. Second, Open Science Initiative is sponsoring research prizes. This is a new way to fund scientific research and we think it has some great potential for increasing both the amount of collaboration between scientists as well as the speed of scientific discovery.

How do I get involved?
Start by browsing around the site. Check out Topics, Prizes, Groups, Collections, and References by clicking the links at the top of this page. If you find a topic interesting, simply 'follow' that topic and updates will appear in your 'activity stream'. If you want to discuss a new issue, simply create a new topic! As you find items on the site that you find interesting, you can organize them in Collections. You can create multiple Collections based on your interests and use them to keep everything organized. You can also browse your colleagues Collections to stay up to date on what they find important.

What are Open Science Initiative Prizes?
Prizes are a new way to fund scientific research. Essentially, a prize outlines specific scientific tasks to be accomplished. The scientist that accomplishes the tasks, gets the prize award. This type of funding has many benefits. It levels the playing field by allowing all scientists to work on a problem. And because the prize is only awarded after the tasks have been accomplished, it ensures that 100% of funding goes to actual scientific progress. And there are many other benefits to prizes, so check out the topics below to learn more.

You can also create new Prize proposals. If you think the community would benefit from the solution to a specific scientific question or problem, just create a prize that outlines what you think should be done. The community can then discuss your proposal and the Open Science Initiative will evaluate it for sponsorship.
