OpSci.org Website Development Priorities

This site is far from complete and we are planning on adding quite a bit of functionality. Here's a a brief overview of the features we are going to add in the short/medium term:

- Privacy: allow items (i.e. topics, collections) to be private.
- 'One up ratings': allow items to be rated quantitatively; something like '+1'
- Expand Prizes: the goal of the prize discussions is to facilitate the creation of scientific micro-prizes. We've already added some feedback devices such as the qualitative ratings and comment section. However, we would like to expand this to include ability to rate a prize on a numeric scale, suggest alternative funding amounts, and some feature like 'i support the creation of this prize'.
- Expand reference functionality: I've just created a simple way of adding references to things like websites and papers. I'd like to expand this with things like automatically pulling paper information from pubmed when a user enters a DIO or Pubmed ID. Also want to allow uploading of images and other documents (latest results image, a draft document, ppt, etc) for storage on opsci.org.
- Add ability to 'invite' others to join/follow topics, collections, etc.

Could/should we change "follow" to "connect/follow" or something ilke that?
B/c it isn't necessarily obvious that if I am in a topic, i could connect it to a group/collection by clicking on "follow"

The ability to add a topic from within a collection.

this feature is next on the list...

this feature has been added... you can add anything you like from within the collection itself.

Do we subcontract out some of the programming or bring in an intern? This seems like a lowhanging fruit that someone else could assist with.

also, a way to search and add KNOWN references from within groups, collections. As it stands you have to add anew. Also, add similar capability to add topics to groups, etc.

What is the difference between Groups, Collections and References.

Good question..I think about groups and collections as hubs/nets to which different "beads/points/items?" (people, topics, references) can be connected. I think there is no difference structurally between the two, but perhaps helpful for people to spur their thoughts as how they might want to use the site. Both should contain more than one item, whereas the "points" do not have to, but could. That's how I see it

for reference funtionality, what about a toolbar item. not an immediate priority, but somehting that could go into safari, I.E.

based on some initial user experiences (thanks Matt), these are some additional items:
1. allow users to invite/share items with one another (so you can invite a member to a group, or suggest they follow a reference or collection or person). will likely create a 'dropbox' on the users dashboard that shows incoming items.
2. need to add ability to add references and collections directly to groups
3. add ability to delete references from topics

Sounds good, like the dropbox idea.
