references are basically just that - any item that you want to reference to. webpage, paper, file, image, etc. that reference can then be internally linked to (or 'referenced') by items within opsci.org like topics, collections, people, and groups. the same reference of course can be cited by many different items.
the difference between groups and collections is a little more subtle. i like collections the most. it is a way to aggregate items wihtin opsci.org that you find related (topics, references, even people - see my graduate research collection). its like bookmark folders on steroids. an easy way to aggregate/organize for yourself and then share with others. if someone follows your collection, they will be updated when you add something and stay up to date on what you find (i can see a justine 'social tools for fundraising' colleciton which of course i would follow.
in a way, we could do with just collections but i added groups if people wanted to self organize. groups are more traditional in that you can become a 'member' and create subgroups. i guess groups are meant to be aggregations of people more than just items on opsci.org. for example the 'OpSci.org Web Development Team' group or the 'Urban lab at CMU' group. subtle difference to collections but enough that i thought it was worth making them both and people can use them as needed.
Which I think highlights my comfort with personal email type things versus facebook or listserv type and the differences between the two, and some of the benefits of this site but also one hurdle to overcome, the personal-public spectrum/gap/question..
The next feature to add is the linking of the activity stream to email, similar to how you get email updates from facebook. except i really want to make it so that the email communication can be BOTH ways (i.e. you can reply to an email and your message will automatically be added to what you replied to, not having to log in the site).
